Week 3: Balancing Progress and Tradition

Week 3: Balancing Progress and Tradition

The third week of my internship on Crete has been shaped by a mix of focused work and the festive atmosphere of the Greek Easter season. The weather was unexpectedly poor for most of the week, which meant we spent more time indoors than planned. However, we made the best of the long holiday weekend and the rainy evenings by relaxing, watching sports, and cooking together in our home near Heraklion.

We started the week by celebrating the end of the Greek Easter festivities. On Monday, we took advantage of the public holiday to go out for dinner and followed it up with a long beach walk. It was an excellent way to clear our heads before returning to our projects at MD Hellas. Even with the gray skies, the atmosphere in the city remained lively and welcoming.

Regarding my professional responsibilities, my focus on the InternConnect project is paying off. MD Hellas operates as an agency for international internships, managing everything from accommodations to placements, so the development of an efficient student and company registration system is central to their operations. I spent the majority of my time working on the database structure of this management system. Under the supervision of Maria, I made significant progress with SQLite on Tuesday, ensuring the backend can correctly handle data for both teachers and students. My understanding of the Django framework is deepening every day as I integrate these database components into InternConnect.

Since the weather was often unfavorable, our evenings were primarily centered around our shared living room. We watched the Champions League action on Tuesday night and followed the NBA playoffs over the weekend. On Wednesday, we finally enjoyed the only sunny day of the week. We immediately headed to the garden to play football. I also took some time to observe the local birds, which provided a quiet break from the technical demands of coding.

Friday evening was a particular highlight as we were finally able to have a barbecue in our garden. After enjoying burgers together, we visited a local Irish pub to experience some of the nightlife. These moments are becoming an essential part of our community life, offering the best opportunity to relax and exchange stories about our different internship placements and daily tasks.

We maintained a relaxed pace on Saturday and Sunday with more grilling and keeping up with the NBA playoffs. We concluded the week on Sunday with a highly anticipated trip to the Palace of Knossos. Exploring this archaeological site was a massive highlight. Seeing the Minoan architecture and the famous frescoes in person provided a completely different perspective on the history of the island. We even encountered a peacock wandering among the ruins, which was a memorable sight to end the day.

Looking back, this week was defined by the balance between technical development at MD Hellas and cultural exploration. Despite the weather challenges, the combination of learning new skills and bonding with the group made for a very successful third week on the island.
