Week 6: Reflections on Design and Community

Week 6: Reflections on Design and Community

The sixth week of my internship was characterized by a steady return to our usual routines and a significant shift in my technical responsibilities. After the quieter period of recovery following our accident, the energy in our shared house near Heraklion has picked up again.

Returning to the office at MD Hellas marked a new phase in my work on the InternConnect project. After focusing heavily on backend logic and database architecture with my supervisor, Maria, I have transitioned into the redesign phase. My current tasks involve using HTML and CSS to overhaul the user interface for both teachers and students. Since MD Hellas serves as a primary agency for international internships, ensuring that the student and company registration system is intuitive is crucial for their daily operations. Seeing the platform evolve from raw data structures into a functional, user-friendly interface is a rewarding milestone in my development.

Life in the house provided a perfect balance to the focused work at the office. The middle of the week was filled with typical shared moments that have come to define our time here. On Wednesday evening, we gathered to watch the Champions League semi-final. Our local garden cat, Laki, continues to be a source of constant entertainment. He even made a bold attempt to snatch a slice of my pizza during dinner, proving he is quite fond of our group. On Thursday, we all collaborated to cook a large batch of Bolognese, which we enjoyed together in the garden. These communal dinners have become our favorite way to decompress and share updates about our respective placements.

Friday added an extra layer of excitement to the week as we went paintballing. It was a high-energy afternoon that served as an excellent team-building exercise for the whole group. Although a few of us ended the day with minor bruises, the shared experience was well worth it. We concluded the day at a local tavern, rewarding ourselves with chicken souvlaki and garlic bread. These authentic meals are a highlight of our week and a great way to recover from both physical activity and the demands of the work week.

The weekend brought much-needed sunshine and a slower pace. On Saturday, we drove into the center of Heraklion for ice cream and spent the afternoon relaxing by the pool at our house. Sunday followed a similar rhythm of enjoying the sun and visiting another local tavern to end the week. As we enter the final two weeks of this journey, I feel a strong sense of accomplishment regarding my technical progress at MD Hellas and the resilience our group has shown.
