Week 4: Heavy Lifting and the Great Escape to the Oasis
Moin! Week three in Heraklion is officially in the books. This week was a stark contrast between physical labor at the shop and breathtaking discoveries in the Cretan nature and history.
Shop Overhaul: More Than Just Moving Boxes
Work-wise, the entire week was dominated by a major restructuring of the store. If you think working in tech is just about keyboards and code, think again!
- The Big Clear-Out: We dismantled an entire wall unit/cabinet and rearranged the inventory. The remaining stock was moved to the warehouse, and we spent a significant amount of time clearing out trash. It sounds like a simple task, but it was incredibly time-consuming and physically demanding.
- Cleaning Warehouse: A huge part of the job was simply getting rid of the clutter. We hauled a lot of trash out to the bins to finally create some space. It sounds straightforward, but the sheer volume of items meant it took up all our time and energy.
Stepping Back in Time: Knossos & the Museum
Once the dust settled at the shop, it was time for some culture.
- Palace of Knossos: It was fascinating to see the remains of such an ancient temple complex. The restored wall art is particularly striking, and it's a great place for a walk when the weather is nice. Pro tip: For those under 25, entry is free (just like many cultural sites here)!

- Archaeological Museum of Heraklion: This is where the real treasures are kept. The level of detail in the exhibits is mind-blowing. I saw a golden animal head the size of a button that was so intricately crafted, it’s hard to believe it was made thousands of years ago.

Nature Wins: The Palm Forest
I have to be honest: while I appreciate culture and archaeology, nothing beats nature. My trip to the Palm Forest was the absolute highlight of the week.

- The Journey: Reaching it was exhausting and technically difficult at times, but the effort was 100% worth it.
- The Oasis: The moment you arrive, you feel like you’ve stepped into a hidden paradise. Surrounded by palm trees and "Oasis-green" water (a vibrant, healthy green, not the murky kind!), it felt like being in a different world. The mountains surrounding the forest make you feel completely tucked away.

- My One Regret: The water looked so inviting that I was genuinely annoyed at myself for not bringing my swimming gear!
Summary of the week: It was a week of hard work and rewarding views. I’ve learned that sometimes you have to clear out the old (literally, in the warehouse) to make room for new experiences. Next time I head into nature, the swim trunks are the first thing in my bag!
